H.J. Sage has been teaching and writing for over 45 years. For five years he wrote speeches and articles for senior military and civilian officials.. His work was published in various journals, including Foreign Affairs, U.S. Naval Institute Proceedings and the Marine Corps Gazette. Chalks Talks on Alcohol by Father Joseph Martin, ghosted by Mr. Sage in 1982, is still in print.

Mr. Sage has published three textbooks on American history. They are in wide use as Open Educational resources and were adopted by the Lone Star Community College System in Texas. In over 40 years of teaching, he has specialized in American political history. Following his retirement from the Marine Corps he attended the University of Maryland, where he received an MA degree in English. His creative thesis was a novel written with Joyce Kornblatt. In addition to The Irish Connection, he has written five additional novels. In writing The Irish Connection Mr. Sage used locations with which he was familiar, starting with Dublin, Ireland. He spent much of his life in Boston, where the early part of the book takes place. He also used knowledge from his course, “The Irish Experience in America.” Where the book deals with the hero's campaign for the House of Representatives, Mr. Sage uses the New York congressional district in which he grew up. For the latter parts of the novel set in Washington, Mr. Sage relies upon his 40 years of living in the Washington area.

H.J. Sage Served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 24 years, retiring in 1981 as a lieutenant colonel. He commanded Marines in Vietnam and was the Ground Defense Force artillery commander at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He served five years as an intructor and five years as an aide and speechwriter to senior military officers. He began his career as an enlisted man at Parris Island and was appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy by the Secretary of the Navy. He graduated in 1962.

His tours of duty included terms as Navy ROTC instructor at Holy Cross College, Worcester, Massachusetts; Aide to the VCNO, the Pentagon; Special Projects Directorate, Headquarters, USMC; The 1st, 2nd and 3rd Marine Divisions, U.S. Army Artillery School, Fort Sill, Oklahoma; and Marine Corps Schools Quantico, Virginia.

Mr. Sage lives with his wife, Nancy, in Lorton, Virginia. He taught history and English at George Mason University, the University of Maryland and Northern Virginia Community College, where he holds the rank of professsor emeritus. He is currently working on two additional novels.
